NORTH WEST BRANCH OF THE FLY DRESSERS GUILD ANNUAL FLY TYING COMPETITION 20/05/08

Over the last few years the branch annual fly tying competition has enjoyed varying degrees of support, dwindling to only two entries last year.  As a result of this your branch committee has thought long and hard to produce a new format for the 2008 competition.

This year’s competition is being sponsored and judged by Pat from Flytek.  The competition will be judged by category and experience of the tyer.  Each entrant will be provided with three materials selected by Pat and must be included in the dressing of each fly.  You will be expected to provide your own tools, vice, hooks and any other materials that you may want to use.  There will of course be the opportunity to beg, steal or borrow from other members.

You will have the chance on the night to use your imagination and tie as many flies in as many categories as you want – Trout, Salmon, Grayling, Pike, Saltwater etc.  All prizes to be awarded at the end of the evening.

Pat will also be bringing a selection of materials to sell on the night and we would ask you to support him.  If you have any specific requirements please contact Chris Watson, 01625 535046 or chrisw.fly@btinternet.com, and he will pass them on.

The success of this year’s competition and the possible future of the annual competition is wholly dependant on your support.

From the Chairman’s Desk,

Saturday, 17 March 2007

Dear Member,

Welcome to what I plan to be a regular point of contact with you all over the coming seasons together.

Firstly, I’d like to thank you for the overwhelming support I received  as your chairman elect, I feel very privileged to be able to work alongside a committed and dedicated committee such as ours to lead the club into the next phase of its development. Reflecting on the past few years we’ve already seen positive changes in our group, a successful website, large screen displays of demonstrations, superb tying demonstrations by our own members and guests and a new venue which is ideal for our activities. We have regular new members arriving from a range of sources and I am pleased with the warm welcome extended to them by the group as a whole. But, this is not a time to sit back and think we’ve managed it all… as Bachman-Turner Overdrive put it ‘You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet’.

Your committee and I have been looking at ways of taking the club even further as a shining example within the Flydressers Guild. Some ideas we shall be sharing with you shortly, some may take a little longer to develop, but will be worth the wait. First of these improvements will be a wireless PA system to enable all to clearly hear our guest speakers, however quiet they may be. There is also an invitation to you to let me know of any changes that you’d like to see within the club, suggestions for guest speakers, events and demonstrations are always welcomed and I’ll always try to make time to talk these over with you at a meeting. You can call me at home or on my mobile if you want, but not during working hours if possible. The numbers are 0161 494 2214 and 07810 123131. You can also email me through the website.

Take a look around, send us your thoughts and make sure you return.

The Flydressers Guild exists to promote an  interest in fly tying and bring together fly-tyers worldwide.

Anyone can join. New members are most welcome - this especially
includes those new to fly dressing.

Local Branch Membership

Typically  a Branch will hold regular flytying classes for all standards, organise talks and demonstrations on all aspects of flytying and flyfishing, and run regular flyfishing outings.

More importantly local Branches offer their members friendship among like minded individuals and provide a happy, congenial, expert environment in which to learn and enjoy flytying and flyfishing.

Each Branch of The Flydressers’ Guild is different, as the Branch membership decides on the activities that their Branch will offer.
